Standing on the Sun

If you were a music fan pre-internet days you'd sometimes buy albums by record labels usually knowing you'd get a good deal from SST, Noise Roadrunner and Metal Blade. Heck, The Goo Goo Dolls had a good album on Metal Blade. Another way was looking at the Thanks list and then searching out albums by the bands thanked. Band T-shirts were another way of checking out bands you might like. Metallica were, in part, responsible for the rise of Faith No More(Check James Hetfield's shirt on the $5.98 E.P) and making The Misfits look like their favourite clothing label.

On their 1993 album Internal Void thank a number of doom bands, Black Flag, Kiss, Jethro Tull, Iron Maiden , Budgie plus a number of 70s hard rock bands. The photo on the back cover features band members wearing St. Vitus, Melvins and Hendrix shirts. All of these help to give a good idea what the band sound like but most telling is that Black Sabbath is printed in upper case. I've read reviews of these guys where the singer is compared to Ozzy. In a few songs it's true but in others a better comparison would be Ozzy if he swallowed a bucketful of rusty nails and then suddenly realized he wasn't up to date on his tetanus shots but decided the music was priority numero uno.

Prioritize.

Penny Dreadfuls

Since I'm going to see Throwing Muses tomorrow night and you probably aren't, here is a poor per-thing's version of them known as Penny Dreadfuls. As fas I know they only released one album on Restless records and disappeared. Penny Dreadfuls probably saw themselves as riot grrls despite their music being closer to pop than punk. Anyway, they'd probably like to beat me if I used gender specific language, man.

Get it.
