Couch Potato Sounds

It's no secret that the small takeover has a soft spot for two piece garage bands who aren't the white stripes. Here's a UK duo who go by the name of King Kool. They've solved Jon Spencer's marriage problems by marrying the sound of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion with the psychobilly rock of The Cramps. Check out their video to their single, "Rocket Roll" below.








Dot Dash are no strangers to this blog as the Washington DC band have released two great power pop albums in two years and both albums contain a faster track.  On their latest album, they punked it up with a Buzzcocks style track entitled, "A Light in the Distance".



It's always been difficult not to mention the Dissociates whenever Dot Dash are discussed on this blog due to both bands sharing a post-punk style.  Here's the London post-punk or post hardcore in the song "Three Years" which features footage from their tour of the Ukraine.







This post started with a duo so I'll end it with number two.  New Zealand industrial duo, Dying of The Light made a video to the title track of their "Monolithium" EP.  The video is bleak and captures the isolation of the bottom of the world in post-apocalyptic style.  There are nods to Godflesh, as well as NZ bands such as The Skeptics and "Churn" period Shihad.  The band's EP contains a Shihad cover.  Check out the EP here  and watch the video below.

Hosoi Bros - Snorlokk

Memphis punk metal thrashers, Hosoi Bros have topped their "Wine Witch" video by featuring skateboarding, blood thirsty juggalos, beercan shotgunning, an evil racoon, Bronski Beat and St Vitus records in their video for "Snorlokk".



The band have put out 300 vinyl singles which you can get through the band's bandcamp page and at the same time check out the flipside. Beware the Snorlokk.

When Pets Attack - Gluten is Good

This is a Christchurch reader, Paul's band called When Pets Attack. Paul discovered the blog through searching for the Cancer Maidens.

No Tag

Here's some New Zealand punk from the early 80's with No Tag performing Mistaken Identity. The band perform in a mock pub and just like in the real McCoy in New Zealand every body stands back with their arms crossed so that their imaginary pints don't spill until the music's half over. It's possible that someone would invent some story how the producer received a knighthood then was killed by pirates but it's doubtful that it's the same guy.

Belated World Cup related youtubage

The football world cup is well over with Spain taking out the trophy and New Zealand being the unbeaten team. Since Spain were the winners and one of the better hard rock albums I received to review was by a Spanish band with the name the just rolls off the tongue, Uzzhuaia, I thought I'd post something by them here.

As the world cup was held in the African continent. Here's Afrika Bambata paired up with Leftfield with the amazingly bizzare video to "Afrika Shox".



And with the All Whites being an umbeaten team here's some Sticky Filth from back in 1988, which was 6 years after the previous NZ world cup effort. The band got support slots with fellow longtimers G.B.H in October this year but Sticky Filth guitarist, Chris Snowden suffered head injuries and a coma recently after being hit by a car so all confirmed shows have sadly but understandably been cancelled.

Dead Wrong

Vorpal Blade are a hardcore from Christchurch, New Zealand. They really like American bands such as Converge, Dillinger Escape Plan and some guys from years back who called themselves Black Flag. Vorpal Blade made a video for their song "Sticks and Stones"






This year they made an album entitled "Dead Wrong"this year and made it available for download.

Sneaky Feelings - Husband House

This was the first ever Flying Nun video I saw. It was on a music show called Radio With Pictures in the mid 80's. The show was renowned for playing much less commercial music than Ready To Roll, which concentrated on top 40. RWP would play Motorhead, Iron Maiden back to back with XTC and The Smiths.
Often watching Radio With Pictures meant going to bed, waiting for other familty members to go to bed so I could crawl back out into the longue, close the doors, turn the tv on, watch the show and then watch the Sunday horror movie that usually followed and ended around midnight. Usually the following day at school, the horror movie would be the topic of conversation.

The Warners - the videos

It appears someone involved with NZ punk band The Warners has recently put some of their videos up on Youtube proving that there are still gems out there hiding among the wannabe stars and pet videos. Below is the video to the icredibly catchy Satellite Surfing. The EP was released on blue vinyl and was put out by Flying Nun in 1989.
